Dealing With the Unknown as a New Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurs face the unknown every day of their working lives. Will my business succeed? Will my company continue to grow? Entrepreneurs face tough, scary questions and ultimately, it’s up to them to provide the answers.

Overcoming Fear and Uncertainty

Nature programmed the human brain to react with fear when faced with a situation that promises an uncertain outcome. Our primitive ancestors relied on this instinct to keep them out of danger. However, this same reaction can be very distracting to modern humans when it comes to making important business decisions. So distracting in fact, that the feelings of fear can lead you to make the wrong decision. Logic gets pushed to the side by fearful thoughts.

To overcome this primitive and unconscious response, realize that every decision you make in your life does not guarantee a positive result. For example, even when calling a business associate, you don’t know if that person will pick up the phone. Everything carries the risk of uncertainty, especially when it comes to business matters.

Less Worry Means Better Decisions

Learning to focus on the problem at hand without obsessing on the fear that it may not work out positively will free you to make more logical choices. When you can put the crippling fear behind you and concentrate on what you want to accomplish with your business instead, that’s when you begin to make progress.

Perfection is an Illusion

Many entrepreneurs become mentally and emotionally bound by their fears because they are terrified of taking a risk. This fear causes them to seek perfect situations, and solutions they believe are guaranteed to work out for them. Instead, concentrating on making a business solution work, although not perfectly, will break through the deadlock of fear and uncertainty. Don’t be afraid to move forward with an idea or strategy because you aren’t guaranteed a positive outcome. A partial success will serve you better than no success at all.

Learning to Trust Yourself

Developing self-trust helps an entrepreneur make better, stronger decisions in all areas of life. Self-trust gives us the strength and courage to take risks without the shadow of crippling fear holding us back. If you continuously doubt yourself and the decisions you have made it will be hard to achieve a high level of success. Learning to trust yourself or your gut feelings can help you make better decisions concerning your company and all areas of your life. When faced with a business problem, try stepping back from any fear-based emotions to view the situation without any thoughts of possible failure. Try not to allow any fantasy scenes of disastrous outcomes influence your thinking and powers of logic. You don’t want to initiate a vicious circle of fear that paralyzes your ability to come up with a solution to your problem.

Failure Doesn’t Have to Be the Enemy

Sometimes failure can teach us the most valuable lessons of how to achieve greater success in the future. Realize you aren’t going to make the best decisions for your business every single time and any failures you experience have the ability to teach you how to make better choices in the future.

“Remember, wealth has nothing to do with money, success has everything to do with failure, and life is as simple as you make it!” – John Dessauer
